The 4th of July

What is your favorite holiday? Why is it your favorite?

Independence Day

For myself, I would say Independence Day (America) is my favorite holiday.

While I rarely partake the cup of patriotism, I’d happily blow something up if given half the chance.

My mother and I would sometimes buy fireworks from the TNT stand but I recall a few years when we went to the reservation to purchase our fireworks. They always had the best ones.

During the summers I would often hang out with my best friend, Cedar. We would play in the woods, the fields, and most often on the beaches.

I quite like the little tanks that roll around. I also liked the battleships you could put in the water and they would propel themselves a short distance.

The day after the 4th, you would often find unspent fireworks half buried in the sand dunes. Bottle-rockets were a favorite of mine. I especially like the ones that whistled as they went up.

The sounds and the sparkle were entirely captivating.

Orcas

I think the allure of fireworks lies in the environment of my upbringing. The violent explosions of bombs were so far removed that they became something of a fantasy or fiction.

My parents weren’t interested in guns or the military. Their own parents had served honorably, but it was not something my parents ever aspired to themselves.

Old Cannon

I recall a neighbor in the “Old Funky Boat Yard” had a miniature hand cannon salvaged from a tall ship. I remember one cloudy day he took it out of case and carefully loaded the ball and gunpowder. It was incredibly loud when he discharged a shot out towards the old rail trestle.

It was absolutely marvelous!

While I was in the Boy Scouts I had narrowly missed an opportunity to shoot at a rifle range. The instructor had finished for the day and we were left to mess about with archery instead.

The first, and likely last, time handling a gun was at the National Guard base near Astoria, Oregon.

While attending the Tongue Point Job Corps Center I had the opportunity to try my hand at a sort of virtual firing range that was built into the interior of a vehicle. My memory is a bit spotty, but I think it was a semi truck?

The rifle was real, so we had to be instructed on how it worked and received some basic shooting instructions. I enjoyed the experience but I had some difficulties sighting with my glasses.

Nowadays, I have returned to simply watching explosions from a comfy seat. I don’t care much for live action violence. I mostly stick to Sentai Squad and Mecha anime when I am in the mood for it.

Well, that will be it for today. Thank you for taking time to read my post.

Questions or comments can be left below. Have a great day!

Nervous? On Edge?!

What makes you nervous?

With the changing seasons comes the arrival of numerous creepy crawly, slithering, and fluttering critters that I honestly could do without.

What would otherwise be a nice walk through the wooded sections of my property becomes a nerve-racking experience as my eyes are nearly constantly glued to the forest floor in search of copperhead snakes.

When I head to the attic to retrieve more suitable seasonal attire, I am often greeted by the screeching of the bats whose ire I earn year after year.

The garage, pump house, and shed with gobs of warm pink insulation provide excellent nesting materials for mice and rats. I have it on good authority that they also feel it is a good place to use the bathroom…

The basement seems to attract no end of centipedes, millipedes, and pill bugs.

And lastly, a new arrival not seen before are the earwigs, which have decided to spend their meager lifespans in the small, moist crevices of our mailbox during the day.

Worse yet, they seem obsessed with squeezing themselves into envelopes and magazines and then promptly dying, leaving me a surprise to find.

I don’t care for the colder months or snow, but I do miss not having to worry about where I step or what I pick up.

Nervous? YES.

Thanks for taking a moment out of your day to indulge this fellow.

SNS Usages

How do you use social media?

I never quite got a handle of the best use for social media platforms.

I think I must spend the majority of my time watching YouTube videos.

I am not sure if I would really consider YouTube to be a social media platform. Beyond the comments section, there is little interaction with viewers.

I tried my hardest to adapt to the likes of Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter when they were just starting out. It was all just so foreign to me.

Especially Facebook. I mean my friends were just a walk away or I would see them in class. I didn’t see the need for it.

My Instagram account is just mostly pictures of food or the garden. I also made a separate account for gaming stuff.

I did use reddit for a long time to talk about doing games and offers in Swagbucks and other services. In fact, some of my early successes with this site came from what I learned from blogging subreddit.

At some point though I deleted my reddit account. I don’t recall why I thought it needed to be so.

Twitter never really took off for me. I don’t think my tag use was good. I would either use too many or not enough.

I also tried my hand at Tumblr, but I didn’t like all the adult content on the platform. No matter how many times I blocked someone or said I wasn’t interested, the site kept pushing adult content into my feed.

Instagram also has a problem with mature content. There are many accounts that are used to disseminate adult content despite the terms of service.

Reporting those accounts is useless. No humans are involved in the process and bad actors have free run of the platform.

The world of social media can be dangerous. You need to stay alert and be careful of what you click on.

That’s it for now.

Questions or comments put them below and thanks for reading.

Primitive Man

Many years ago I got hooked on YouTube videos about self sufficiency and living in nature. There was stuff about building bamboo houses, making bricks, forging bronze tools, and clearing land for rice paddies.

At some point I got it into my head to try making a primitive furnace out back. The soil in these parts is all red clay and I thought I could replicate what I was seeing on the TV screen.

I spent a couple weeks tearing up the lawn, cutting down trees, and digging a large pit. My first goal was to make charcoal. So, got together a bunch of wood and built a tepee shaped tower.

Afterwards, I worked the clay into coils and blocks and built a very ugly tower around the wood and then filled in any gaps. I left a small opening near the ground in the pit and the top had another opening.

I then spent an hour or so trying to light the wood on fire. It did catch, but after awhile the clay began to dry out and crack in spots. Parts of the clay fell away from the tower. Worse still, I had left air pockets in the clay and they began to explode.

After getting hit with little bits I panicked and dumped a bucket of water on the tower. Now, if you go out back all there is left of the furnace is a lumpy spot on the lawn. It is overgrown with weeds in that one spot, if you pull up the weeds you can still find parts of the clay bricks.

It was a sobering experience, I learned my lesson and stick to watching YouTube and not living it.

Leisure Time

What do you enjoy doing most in your leisure time?

Well I do spend an inordinate amount of time on the computer, but I’d like to cut back on this if I can.

What I really enjoy doing is watching Korean Dramas and Variety Shows.

I started out with Dragon Ball Z and Gundam as a child not quite realizing these were foreign programs.

Once I got to the Job Corps Center I met a lot of Anime fans and really broadened my horizon’s. I even heard some G-Dragon tracks, but at the time I didn’t know it was Korean music.

Around 2008, I mistakenly began watching a live-action Japanese drama called Moyashimon. I had thought it was an anime based on the cover and synopsis.

This was my first taste of live-action Asian television. Afterwards I began downloading batches of Japanese TV and Movies in torrent files from a site called D-Addicts.

Sometime in 2009 just after Dungeons and Dragons went free-to-play, I can remember joining a party and it said in the social panel (Listening to Music), The party leader explained that his friend was a K-pop fan and that there would be music playing in the background as we played.

This was my official introduction to Korean music. The music playing was by the group Girls Generation (SNSD), I became hooked on their music. I completely stopped listening to Reggae, the Beatles, and Indi-Pop.

My first Korean drama was the period piece Hong Gil-dong (쾌도 홍길동), I then watched The Chaser, and a few movies.

I tried keeping a list of all the shows I have watched, but I forgot to save the file once when i reinstalled Windows, and another time the flash drive I had it on went through the washing machine, and then the next computer died. I have lost many lists and forgotten the names of much of what I have watched.

Currently, I am quite happily watching I Am Solo and the spinoff I Am Solo, Love Forever. Also, I have been keeping up with Running Man, My Little Old Boy, and Hangout with Yoo.

I can remember when Survivor and American Idol first aired. I didn’t understand why everyone was so excited with the shows. I couldn’t see the appeal of Reality television shows back then.

But I get it now. I don’t think I’ll ever grow bored of watching variety shows.

A responsible person…

What makes a good leader?

A good leader…

Does: Communicate intent to others, follow through with commitments, accept outcomes, and be open to change.

Does not: Expect others to do work for you, blame external factors for adverse results, make excuses to avoid responsibilities, or abuse the time and effort of others.

On Course: Strategies for Creating Success in College, Career, and Life

Authors: Skip Downing, Jonathan Brennan

Publisher: Cengage Learning 2019

For myself, I have difficulty seeing differences between the Victim/Creator dynamic presented by the authors and the precepts of ableism.

The text and accompanying materials routinely present situations and circumstances in absolutes. Indeed the text plainly states that if you disagree with the lesson, that you are acting as a Victim. This is simply gaslighting.

However, I believe there is a middle ground not mentioned in the text that would be preferable to the Creator dynamic presented by the authors.

Something similar to that dynamic has historically been adopted by certain groups and employed to atrocious ends.

Certainly, I recognize that this may not have been the intent of the authors. But from an ethical standpoint, these parallels should not be overlooked. Good intentions are not an excuse for bigotry.

Cengage, through their role as a publisher in higher education, wields ample powers of influence on present and future generations of learners.

Careful consideration must be given by editors to insure that hateful perceptions are not unintentionally woven into their finished works.

Chit Chat

In what ways do you communicate online?

Forums and Email are my preferred means of communication. I’ve done some Zoom calls and I think once I tried Skype.

I think I prefer having the time to think about what I want to convey to the other person and then going through the process of writing out a letter. I can go back and make changes to the tone or place extra emphasis on certain points.

On a video call all of this happens on the fly and any mistakes cannot be undone.

I also get quite uncomfortable with long pauses on a video call. Someone asks me a question that I need to think about.

I pause.

I can hear the Jeopardy theme playing in my brain.

Oh, it’s so awkward.

I end up just saying anything to cut short the pause. I get misunderstood by others and sometimes my self as well.

One avenue of communication I no longer use is Discord. Many years ago I became the target of racism and harassment by other users on the platform.

They (Discord) offered little to no accountability or remedy at the time and I didn’t feel safe being there anymore. I haven’t returned to the platform since.

I often get asked for my Discord ID or to hop on chat with others and I have to be honest with people and let them know that I don’t use it.

I also take the time to inform them of my experience so they will be aware. The worst thing you can do when you face injustice is to remain silent.

a moment to be real

Daily writing prompt
What is your mission?

I get a large amount of traffic to my other blogs, but they are so niche that I can’t really post anything real or personal on them.

I spent so long building up my audience on the other blogs that it would be very odd to say something off topic. The same goes for my YouTube channel. In the past I have tried to debut content from other niches and it has driven people away.

I made this blog to be a place for me to be myself and talk about real life, both my past and the future I want to have.

I do find myself getting distracted frequently, but that is just a part of living with autism. I have many projects that are halfway complete and others that I have simply given up on. I keep these unfinished works around just in case I get reinspired. I would hate to start all over again.

My newest project has been developing mobile apps. I don’t know how long I might be on this track, so I am just trying to enjoy each step of the journey.

Coast to Coast

Daily writing prompt
What colleges have you attended?

Clatsop Community College (OR) and Vance-Granville Community College (NC).

After completing two vocational certificates in Landscaping and Facility Maintenance at the Tongue Point Job Corps Center, I applied to the local Clatsop community college.

I took general courses for a year and a half. My electives included a Local Government course that had me attend some local legislative meetings for the county and write a report on each.

I also took 3 semesters of World Religions. The first semester centered on early cultures and the relevance of spiritual belief and tribal/shamanistic practices.

The second semester covered the Eastern religious systems including Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, Daoism, and several minority systems for smaller cultural groups.

The third semester focused on Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Our professor suffered a medical condition and was unable to teach during the third semester and another teacher took over. The book curriculum stayed the same, however, the new instructor suggested a field trip to Portland to visit some temples and so I and a few classmates went on a trip.

We visited a Mosque where the men and women went into separate sections of the building and received differing instruction on the principles of faith and the teachings of Muhammed. I received a copy of the Koran which I still keep.

Afterwards we visited a synagogue attended by Reform Jews and got to speak with some members of the community. Reform Judaism differs from the Orthodox faith you find in Israel.

Reform Judaism is the largest Jewish denomination in America. It emphasizes adapting Jewish tradition to contemporary needs, with a focus on social justice, gender equality, and making Judaism accessible to a wider audience. They are cool with interfaith couples, ordaining women and openly gay people as rabbis. They view the Torah as a living document that evolves with time.

More recently, I am attending Vance-Granville community college through an online degree program for Business Administration. I enjoy the classwork and the modules in the learning platform they use.

I hope to graduate sometime in 2024 and get a job in banking or finances.
