Coffee & Bagels

I was pleasantly surprised today while checking in for my Nissan LEAF appointment at the local dealership.

In the customer waiting area, on the counter were these wonderful bagels from a local shop my mother frequents, Jeff’s Bagel Run.

Jeff’s Bagel Run

Just the other day my mother and I had lox and cream cheese on some Asiago bagels she had picked up from the shop. The lox and fixings came in a packaged set with sliced red onions, tomato, cucumbers, and of course the cream cheese.

I was a bit sad actually, because I had lunch just before driving to the dealership, so I didn’t have any room for a bagel. So, I grabbed an espresso from the coffee machine instead.

I am getting my front wiper blades replaced today. The left wiper blade has been loose for several months. When it’s sunny out I forget it needs fixing. Then when it rains I procrastinate or insist its not that bad.

There is this one spot just above my view out the windshield where the pine straw always gets stuck and the wiper just flops over it and all the water nearby. It’s kind of infuriating when I am driving.

But, somehow, when I get home and step out of the car, I forget all of my driving worries. They don’t seem to exist until I step back in the car. Maybe it’s my personality or something to do with being a pedestrian for so many years. I just worry about the car much.

Other than the appointment, I have a small parcel to drop off at the Post Office. A pair of  IZOD Saltwater Stretch shorts I posted yesterday, received an offer and I accepted right away.

I also wanted to swing by the Goodwill, but I may need to reorganize the order of events. I actually started watching a new drama, “My Youth” and was running late for the appointment, so I skipped the Post Office.

I had planned on dropping it off on the way back, but I don’t know how long I might be at the dealership and the post closes at 4:30. It is 2:30 right now. I suppose I could find a local post or just back track to a different Goodwill location after delivering the parcel.

I’ll have to think about it.

Yesterday, I went to the Treasure Hunt shop looking for a second wifi repeater, but I didn’t have any luck. I got distracted and was wandering around the shop with a pile of food in one arm and poking around the bins.

I decided to put most of the food back, thankfully. I did purchase 12 dollars of goods though.

I got two new frigidaire 80 lb wall mounts, a Goodyear v-belt, and a jar of sofrito bullion.

Daily writing prompt
What are your feelings about eating meat?

I love to watch mukbang videos on YouTube. In particular, I enjoy watching tzuyang devour samgyupsal (pork belly).

I don’t really give much deep thought to eating meat now that I am older. If I find I am hungry, well then, whatever happens to be in front of me may well become a meal.

I can recall a phase in my youth when I took exception to meat and limited my diet to fruits, grains, and vegetables. I don’t recall when that ended, but think I was like that for a couple of years.

Another time for about 4 months I stuck to a Rajasic Yoga diet, eating only foods that are given, such as milk, nuts, and fruit. That didn’t turn out well. I gained a lot of weight and my blood sugar was really high.

My doctor told me to stop it. I can’t even recall how I got into it in the first place.

With the passage of time I have become something of a simple creature.

If I see food, I will generally eat it.

When I get hungry I will wander into my mothers kitchen in search of grub. If I can’t find anything left out, then I will usually have a bowl of cereal or a pot noodle.

Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

I don’t usually go in for holidays. However, I am not one to say no to good food. My mother has a number of holidays, in addition to the standard set, that she will celebrate throughout the year.

  • Star Wars Day (May 4th)
  • Matrix Day (Mar 31st)
  • Bilbo and Frodo’s Birthday (Sept 22)
  • Harry Potter Day

Since this is a food related question I think it best to respond with pictures.

What are your family’s top 3 favorite meals?

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I had access to a wide variety of foods. I think though that my families most frequent meals revolved around those dishes most closely associated with my ancestry.

Coconut Curry
Fried Chicken
Fish and Chips

I am a product of British and African-American parentage. Between, and as a part of, my broad world views and cultural upbringing, I have over time developed a discerning, yet liberal palette.

My love for food has reached even to the far east. I have taken every opportunity available to indulge in foreign foods from China, Japan, and Korea including Kimchi, Sukiyaki, and Mapo Tofu.

I am not alone either in these endeavors. Each year my mother brews the Korean rice drink Makgeolli and my father stores away many a container of homemade Kimchi.

Still, I cannot escape it. Curry with poppadom and fish with chips will always remain dear and true in my heart.

Hobbit Day 2021

Hobbit Day is a name used for September 22 in reference to its being the birthday of the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien’s popular set of books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

According to the fictional setting, Bilbo was born in the year of 2890 and Frodo in the year of 2968 in the Third Age (1290 and 1368 respectively in Shire-Reckoning.)

Primo Pizza – Clayton, NC

With Covid related limitations easing in the state we decided to go for a drive. After a relaxed southward course along old roadways we arrived in Clayton, NC.

There are so many interconnected roads and we seemed to drive on each patch for a time. Medlin, Buffalo, Eagle Rock, Rolesville, Wendell Lake and O’Neil. Many names passed by on the trip down.

I ordered the Greek Salad (6.99) and 엄마 got an Italian Sub (6.99) and a Diet Coke (2.00). We sat inside near the broad window and ate our meal.

The parlor has a rustic feel to it with uneven tables and the ceiling which I cannot exactly describe. Old metal sheeting with embossed floral designs meeting brick walls exposed in between aged drywall.

Swagbucks – Green Chef

Green Chef

This was my second meal delivery service deal. The first was from Sunbasket. This one from Green Chef pays out 5000 SB and the package cost $35 so I made about $15 on the deal.

The ice packs had melted in shipping and the poor FedEx guy had a mess in his truck. He had a form to return the box as damaged but I told him it was fine as I had gotten the stuff for free.

After hauling the soggy box inside, I found that the bags inside were dry. The ice was in a separate compartment below the food near the bottom.

We’ve already got dinner for tonight’s cooking so I will save these until tomorrow. I will update the post as each meal gets cooked, so check back soon.

EDIT: 5-19-21 Well, I forgot to take pictures and have eaten all the food. Sorry.

Kasanje Visualizations

I have just got a ton of photos of birds, flowers, bamboo and garden vegetables in my collection. Back when I traveled overseas I took many photos of castles in both England and France. I love taking pictures on my both my camera and my smartphone.

My phone is a Samsung A21s it has a quad-camera setup on the back that includes a high-res primary shooter, an ultrawide snapper, a macro cam, and a depth sensor.

The camera is an older Fujifilm Finepix HS 25 EXR. Its got 16.0Mp Resolution, a 24-720mm Fujinon 30x Optical zoom Lens, a Tilting 3.0″ LCD Monitor and can do Video Capture at 1920 x 1080 HD.

So I signed up at POND5 and I’ll be slowly putting up some of my better photos on the site. The blog could certainly use some more traffic but this is also a potential source of income which is always appreciated. I don’t have my drone license yet so I won’t be uploading the footage of me crashing into things.

New Health Regimen

I recently visited my doctor and was informed that my cholesterol is sky-high and I likely need to go on medication. I had previously been told this when visiting a CVS Minute Clinic, but I was hopeful that since then I had been able to lower my numbers.

I’ve been given 3 months to get my numbers in proper order, otherwise, I will be put on medication. So I went ahead and bought some Herbal supplements that should aid me in my quest. I’ve eliminated all meat from my diet except for salmon which has those nice Omega-3’s.

My meals each day are highly regimented. Breakfast is oatmeal, and lunch is a Slimfast mixed into a protein smoothie. Dinner is rice, vegetables, and salmon. The salmon is canned which is nice and cheap though I may occasionally have something more fresh from the grocery store if it is on sale.

There are 4 pills that I take either each morning or mixed into my lunchtime Slimfast smoothie. I bought them on Amazon using gift cards that earned on Swagbucks. So I didn’t really spend any real money on these which is nice. I also got the Slimfast on a monthly subscription which got me a juicy 45% discount on the orders.
