FWF Archive: Private Payments

Learn more…

This is an archival post; the contents are well over 2 decades old, but some details may still be relevant.

I am editing some details.

Originally, all links were redirected from the forums, but they don’t work anymore. These require manual editing to remove the redirects and restore the URLs.

The copy/paste process is also compacting lines, so I do need to edit the spacing. I am also removing duplicate posts. And finally, some light edits to mispelled words.

Rank: New MemberI know Amex Blue lets you generate individual credit card numbers for individual orders, so that an untrusted etailer cannot rip you off too much (more than what you assigned to the private payment number).

Are there other credit cards that let you generate numbers like this?

I would like a card with better popularity than Amex (Mastercard or Visa).

Thanks in advance.

you just sign up, and you can generate the numbers when you want.

they have a desktop app that you can download to generate numbers too, but that software’s pretty shaky. i think it doesn’t work with win2k..

Rank: Ancient MemberAmex doesn’t give cards to 16 year olds so I just use FatShoe.com debit cards, fund it via one of my other credit cards, and use it online, only putting as much money on it as I am spending. Not nearly as safe as Amex private payments, but it works if you don’t qualify for an Amex or Discover card.

Rank: YattaIf I’m not mistaken, many credit card companies are willing to give you a one-time-use number. You just have to call them and request one. I believe Discover, along with AMEX Blue, are the easiest to deal with. All others you’ll just have to give your CC company a quick call.

Rank: Memberguys, if you used a private payment credit card numbers to make a purchase and later you want to return your purchase after the private payment number expired, the merchant may be unable to refund the money back to your account.

that happened to me when I made a return to buy.com, I had to call customer service and give them my account number to get the money refunded.

Rank: Senior MemberIs there a card that has both private payments and a rewards program?

My dream card would have private payments, full (not secondary) car rental insurance coverage, and a rewards program. Is there any chance I can find them all on one card?
