Most Retainers have a complementary Lover whose Skill can be improved to benefit the paired Retainer. This allows you to boost that primary stats of your Retainers initially and later improve other attributes.
Rare Retainers can Bond with more than one Lover, gaining benefit from several Bond Links.

Collecting Retainers
Retainers become available as the player rises in level.
Special and Limited Retainers may be earned from Events and by collecting fragments or exchange items.
Your first Retainer is Marco Polo, who pairs with Jane.

Collecting Lovers
Lovers are gained through random encounters at the Post House, with each map location including several possible partners to meet.
Each require a certain number of repeated encounters before they will join your Backyard.
